Main AHU Components
- Fresh Air / Return Air Section
Controls the introduction and recirculation of air according to the HVAC design. - Pre-Filtration Section
Removes larger airborne particles before air enters the finer filtration stages. - Cooling Coil
Removes sensible and latent heat from the air. It can be connected to a chilled-water system or other specified cooling source. - Heating Section
Provides heating when required for temperature control or winter operation. - Humidification / Dehumidification
Configured when the cleanroom process requires tighter humidity control. - Fan Section
Provides the required airflow and static pressure for the downstream air distribution system. - HEPA Filtration
Can be incorporated where the system design requires high-efficiency final filtration. - Control Section
Monitors and regulates operating parameters such as temperature, humidity, fan status, and differential pressure.

Cleanroom Air DistributionHEPA filter location depends on the cleanroom HVAC design. In some systems, final HEPA filtration is installed at the terminal FFU or ceiling level rather than directly inside the AHU
Temperature & Humidity Control
The AHU can be configured to support temperature and humidity control through cooling coils, heating sections, humidification and dehumidification functions. Control parameters are selected according to the cleanroom process, product requirements, outdoor conditions and HVAC design.
- Supply air temperature
- Return air temperature
- Relative humidity
- Cooling coil
- Heating coil
- Humidifier
- Dehumidification
- Sensors
- PLC/HMI
HVAC System Integration
The Clean Room AHU can be integrated with:
- Chilled Water Chiller
- Chilled Water Pumps
- Cooling Towers, where applicable
- Ductwork
- HEPA Filters
- FFUs
- Cleanroom Terminal Units
- Differential Pressure Monitoring
- Temperature & Humidity Sensors
- BMS
The AHU primarily conditions and supplies air, while terminal filtration and airflow distribution are determined by the overall cleanroom HVAC design.
Engineering & Selection Process
Engineering & Selection Process
- 1. Requirement Analysis
Review cleanroom classification, room volume, occupancy, process heat load, outdoor air requirements, temperature and humidity targets. - 2. Airflow Calculation
Determine supply and return airflow based on room requirements, air-change strategy, pressure relationships and process requirements. - 3. AHU Selection
Select airflow capacity, static pressure, cooling/heating capacity, filtration stages, fan type and control configuration. - 4. System Integration
Coordinate AHU with chillers, pumps, ductwork, HEPA filters, FFUs, sensors and BMS. - 5. Manufacturing
Manufacture the AHU according to the approved configuration and technical specifications. - 6. Testing & Commissioning
Perform applicable factory inspection and support on-site commissioning according to the project scope.

Typical System Configuration&Workflow
![]()
-
-
Outside Air Pretreatment Section: Provides initial filtration and conditioning (temperature/humidity) for outside air, sometimes incorporating energy recovery from exhaust air.
-
Mixing Section: Outside air and cleanroom return air are mixed in a controlled ratio.
-
Temperature & Humidity Conditioning Section:
-
Cooling Coil: Uses chilled water for cooling and dehumidification.
-
Heating Coil: Uses hot water or electric elements for heating.
-
Humidification Section: Injects clean steam.
-
-
Fan Section: A draw-through configuration (fan located after the coils) is more common, placing the coil section under negative pressure to prevent condensate leakage. Fans are typically VFD-controlled.
-
Intermediate & Flow Straightening Sections: Ensure even airflow distribution across filters.
-
Filtration Section: Houses medium-efficiency filters.
-
Acoustic Attenuation Section: Reduces noise generated by high-volume fans.
-
Discharge Section: Connects to ductwork leading to HEPA/ULPA filter fan units or ceiling terminals in the cleanroom.
-
Control System: The central brain, often using DDC/PLC, which integrates with room sensors (temperature, humidity, pressure) to enable automated regulation.
-
Engineering Process
- Requirement Analysis
Review airflow, cooling/heating load, filtration and cleanroom requirements. - AHU Configuration
Select casing, filters, coils, fans and control components according to project specifications. - Manufacturing & Inspection
Assemble and inspect the AHU before shipment. - Installation & Commissioning
Support installation, airflow adjustment and system commissioning. - Testing & Documentation
Provide applicable testing records, operation manuals and project documentation.
