Laminar Airflow Unit (LAF) is a core device within cleanroom environments designed to create a localized zone of ultra-high cleanliness. It generates a stable, uniform, and unidirectional (laminar) stream of air through High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) or Ultra-Low Penetration Air (ULPA) filters. Airflow Patterns

    • Vertical Laminar Flow (VLF): Air flows vertically downward from the ceiling through the work zone and exits via floor return grilles.

    • Horizontal Laminar Flow (HLF): Air flows horizontally from one wall across the work zone to the opposite exhaust wall.

    • Core Principle: The "Piston Effect" – clean air moves at a constant velocity, pushing contaminants in a directed flow toward exhaust points, preventing dispersion and cross-contamination.

Filtration System

    • Pre-Filter: Captures larger particles to protect the main filter.

    • HEPA Filter: Minimum 99.995% efficiency on particles ≥0.3 μm.

    • ULPA Filter: Minimum 99.9995% efficiency on particles ≥0.12 μm.

  • Housing/Casing: Constructed from stainless steel, aluminum, or coated galvanized steel for durability, cleanability, and corrosion resistance.

  • HEPA/ULPA Filter: The core filtration element, mounted on the discharge side, providing final air cleaning.

  • Centrifugal Blower Fan: Typically a backward-curved impeller design, providing stable airflow with good energy efficiency and low noise. Units may feature single or multiple fans (for redundancy).

  • Pre-filter: Usually a primary (G4) or medium-efficiency (F8) filter located at the fan inlet. It protects the main HEPA filter and extends its service life by capturing larger particles.

  • Control System:
    • Speed Control: Modern FFUs predominantly use Electronically Commutated (EC) motors, allowing infinite variable speed control via 0-10V DC, PWM signals, or network commands. This enables precise airflow adjustment and significant energy savings compared to older AC motor designs.

    • Monitoring: May include integrated differential pressure sensors (to monitor filter loading), status indicator lights, alarm functions, and communication interfaces for connection to Building Management Systems (BMS).

  • Airflow Diffuser/Perforated Plate: Mounted below the filter, it helps to equalize and stabilize the discharged airflow, promoting uniform laminar flow.
