Air Handing Unit

AHU (Air Handling Unit) is a modular air treatment device composed of a filtration section, a temperature and humidity treatment section, a fan section, an air damper mixing section, and auxiliary function sections (such as noise reduction, monitoring, and maintenance). It can perform air filtration, temperature and humidity regulation, airflow mixing and delivery in accordance with preset process parameters. Widely applied in the centralized air-conditioning systems of industrial clean environments and civil buildings, it achieves precise control of the environmental parameters of target spaces.

  •  Air Mixing & Proportioning

    • Purpose: To balance energy efficiency with indoor air quality (IAQ).

    • How it Works: Dampers automatically adjust the ratio of outside fresh air and indoor return air. This allows for "free cooling/heating" using return air to save energy while ensuring sufficient fresh air intake for occupant health and ventilation requirements.

  •  Air Filtration & Purification

    • Purpose: To protect downstream equipment and improve IAQ by removing contaminants.

    • How it Works: Air passes through a series of filters.
      • Pre-filter: Traps large particles like dust and lint, protecting coils and fans.

      • Medium-efficiency filter: Removes finer particles (e.g., pollen, mold spores), common in commercial buildings.

  • Air Temperature & Humidity Control

This is the core conditioning process, achieved via heat exchangers and humidifiers.

    • Cooling & Dehumidification: Air passes over a cooling coil carrying chilled water (~7°C) from a chiller or direct-expansion refrigerant. The air cools below its dew point, causing moisture to condense and drain away.

    • Heating: Air passes over a heating coil carrying hot water from a boiler or using electric resistance elements.

    • Humidification: In dry climates or during winter, a humidifier (steam, ultrasonic, or evaporative) adds precise moisture to the air.

  • Air Movement & Distribution

    • Purpose: To provide the motive force for airflow and deliver it to the occupied spaces.

    • How it Works:
      • Fan: The "heart" that provides the pressure to move air through the ductwork. Modern AHUs use Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) fans to modulate airflow based on demand, saving significant energy.

      • Silencer/Attenuator: Reduces noise generated by the fan and airflow.

      • Conditioned air is then distributed quietly and evenly to rooms via ductwork and diffusers.

  •  Energy Recovery (A Key Feature in High-Efficiency AHUs)

    • Purpose: To dramatically reduce heating and cooling energy consumption.

    • How it Works: A heat recovery device (e.g., heat wheel, plate heat exchanger) is placed where the exhaust air and fresh intake air streams cross. It transfers thermal energy from the exhaust air to pre-condition the incoming fresh air, potentially reducing loads by over 60%.

  • Fresh Air/Return Air Mixing Section
    • Equipped with fresh air dampers, return air dampers and exhaust air dampers, the opening degree of the dampers is adjusted by electric actuators to precisely control the mixing ratio of fresh air and return air.
    • In civil scenarios, usually 20% - 30% of fresh air is mixed to ensure indoor oxygen content; in industrial clean rooms, the fresh air volume is adjusted according to the pressure difference requirements to maintain positive/negative pressure balance.
     
  • Filtration Section
    • It is the core link for AHU to ensure the cleanliness of supply air, and usually adopts a multi-stage filtration design:
      • Primary Efficiency Filter: Intercepts large particle dust, hair, fibers, etc., protects the subsequent medium efficiency filter and fan. Common materials are non-woven fabrics and metal mesh, with a cleaning cycle of about 1 - 3 months.
      • Medium Efficiency Filter: Filters suspended particles with particle size ≥1μm. The material is mostly non-woven fabrics and glass fiber, with a replacement cycle of about 3 - 6 months.
      • Optional Sub-high Efficiency Filter: Installed in high-demand scenarios (such as pre-treatment of clean rooms) with higher filtration efficiency, reducing the load of terminal HEPA filters.
       
    • Equipped with differential pressure monitoring device to monitor the differential pressure across the filter in real time, and issue a replacement reminder when the differential pressure exceeds the standard.
     
  • Temperature and Humidity Treatment Section
     
    It realizes the precise control of air temperature and humidity, and is the core functional section of AHU:
    • Refrigeration/Dehumidification Section: Built-in surface cooler connected with chilled water or refrigerant. When air flows through the surface cooler, the temperature drops, and water vapor condenses on the fin surface to achieve dehumidification. It is suitable for summer or high-humidity environments.
    • Heating Section: Divided into hot water heating (energy-saving and environmentally friendly with hot water supply) and electric heating (fast heating and strong controllability), used for winter heating or constant temperature control required by processes.
    • Humidification Section: Different humidification methods are selected according to needs to meet the humidity requirements of dry environments:
      • Dry Steam Humidification: Uniform humidification without water droplets, suitable for high-precision scenarios such as clean rooms and electronic workshops.
      • Electrode Humidification: Generates steam by heating water through electrodes with high control precision.
      • High-pressure Spray Humidification: Low cost, suitable for civil or general industrial scenarios.
       
     
  • Fan Section
     
    It provides power for air delivery and is the "power heart" of AHU:
    • The core components are centrifugal fans or axial fans. Centrifugal fans are mostly used in clean rooms and large buildings due to their high air pressure and long air supply distance.
    • Standard equipped with variable frequency motor, which can adjust the fan speed according to indoor load changes (such as temperature and humidity deviation, pressure difference changes), realize energy-saving operation and precisely control the air supply volume.
    • Equipped with shock absorption devices (such as shock absorption springs and shock absorption pads) to reduce vibration transmission during fan operation and lower noise.
     
  • Auxiliary Functional Sections
    • Noise Reduction Section: Built-in silencer to reduce the noise generated by fan operation and air flow. It is a standard configuration for civil buildings and noise-sensitive laboratories to ensure that indoor noise meets the specifications.
    • Maintenance Section: Equipped with maintenance doors and platforms for personnel to enter the unit for maintenance, filter replacement and fan inspection.
    • Air Supply Section: Connected to the air supply duct, and some units are equipped with air volume regulating valves here to further distribute air volume precisely.
