A cleanroom adopts enclosed structures, proper air treatment, optimized airflow organization and reasonable pressure differentials to achieve the required air cleanliness and satisfy production demands. Hence, air cleaning technology is also known as cleanroom technology.
There are two main ways to maintain air cleanliness: introducing clean air to dilute polluted indoor air, and accelerating the exhaust of highly contaminated air. To meet the cleanliness standards of cleanrooms for production and other purposes, a combination of comprehensive measures is required, which are listed as follows.

Control pollution sources and reduce pollutant emissions.
Adopt processes and equipment with low pollutant generation, or apply isolation and negative pressure measures to prevent pollutants from spreading. Also reduce contaminants brought in by personnel and materials.

Effectively prevent outdoor pollutants from entering the room.
This is the primary approach to pollution control in cleanrooms, involving air purification methods and indoor pressure regulation. Based on different cleanliness requirements, varying volumes of treated clean air are supplied while polluted air is exhausted, so as to maintain the standard air cleanliness.
Air purification for supply air is therefore critical, which explains why cleanrooms have far higher air change rates than ordinary air-conditioned rooms. Lower cleanliness class corresponds to higher air change rates. Positive pressure is applied in both industrial and general biological cleanrooms.

Quickly and effectively remove existing indoor pollutants.
It is also key to the function of cleanrooms. Proper airflow organization, achieved by elaborate design of the position, size and type of air supply and return outlets, guides indoor air to flow in a fixed direction and avoids dead zones and secondary pollution. Different airflow patterns directly affect construction difficulty and project cost.

Flow velocity control
Air inside cleanrooms needs a proper flow velocity to resist disturbances such as heat currents. Excessively high speed will stir up accumulated dust and cause contamination.

System airtightness
Good airtightness is required not only for the ventilation system, but also for joints of building components and openings where pipes penetrate enclosures to avoid air leakage. Visible gaps and cracks cannot block dust particles of 0.5 micrometers.

Architectural measures
It covers surrounding environment design, building structure, material selection, layout and airtightness treatment. Low-dust and microbe-resistant interior decoration materials and facilities are recommended.

To control particulate contamination in workshops during production with air cleaning technology, cleanrooms must be built with qualified materials. Only in cleanrooms can particulate pollution be effectively managed. Clearly, air cleaning technology and cleanrooms are closely linked.
